Two D’Antonis and two Bickerstaffs add up to …

I put on the Staples Center headset and analyzed Mike D’Antoni’s present and future as Lakers coach on the NBA TV “GameTime” show Sunday evening. (Video of the spot here.)

One of the topics Brent Barry, Sam Mitchell and Rick Kamla wanted to discuss was Dan D’Antoni directing much of Mike D’Antoni’s first two Lakers practices — even as Bernie Bickerstaff remains in command during games on the bench. That’s one reason why D’Antoni stays back in the locker room or training room during games, so as not to interfere with the feel that Bickerstaff has during the game.

Dan D’Antoni was officially hired by the Lakers on Sunday as an assistant coach, the same role he had for his little brother Mike with the Knicks in 2008-11. Dan also was an assistant for Mike’s final three years in Phoenix. Before that, Dan spent three decades as head coach of Socastee High School in Myrtle Beach, S.C., compiling more than 500 victories.

In another family matter, Bickerstaff got to coach against his son, J.B., on Sunday night. J.B. is one of Kevin McHale’s assistant coaches with the Rockets.
